Sandro Vasiliadis, a nurse at the Whidbey Island General Hospital, has died of an apparent heroin overdose. When his grieving mother bends over to kiss her son's corpse at the viewing, she shrieks, "That's not Sandro!" Convinced that her son must still be alive, Maria Vasiliadis hires Kyra Rachel and Noel Franklin to solve the mystery. With questions of foul play continuing to swirl around the death, the detectives' inquiries lead them deeper into Sandro's life and eventually to a medical clinic that specializes in transgendering.

The second in the Islands Investigations International Mystery series, Always Kiss the Corpse takes Kyra and Noel's investigation from the rush of Seattle to the seeming peace of the San Juan Islands in this thrilling pause-resistor. It's only once the detectives come to understand Sandro in life that they unlock the secret to his death.

Island Investigations International (Triple-I) follows up its initial success, Never Sleep with a Suspect on Gabriola Island, by crossing the maritime border into equally scenic Puget Sound. Award-winning authors Sandy Duncan and George Szanto dispatch their intrepid and pleasantly eccentric duo to Whidbey Island, not far from Seattle. A bereaved family has a puzzle on its hands.
Sleuths Kyra Rachel and Noel Franklin are hired to find out why a dead man's mother bent over his corpse at the funeral home and said, "That's not Sandro!" Is she merely distraught, or has the embalmer botched the job? The conservative Greek community values discretion as much as it prizes manhood. So when Sandro Vasiliades's cheeks seem too smooth for the heavily-bearded masculine figure everyone remembers, Kyra and Noel think they might have an answer. Complicating the case is the sad fact that he died apparently alone in a remote spot from an overdose of heroin. Family and friends swear that he was a happy man who never dabbled in drugs. The truth is critical because in the Greek Orthodox Church a suicide may not be buried on sacred ground.
Once again, the authors showcase the mystique of the Pacific Northwest island culture, whether taking ferries or touching down in a float plane. In the rare temperate rainforest setting, these island jewels sparkle as much as the writing. "He glanced through the float plane's window, so tiny it seemed as if he had to view the constricted panorama with only one eye at a time. Below him the south end of Gabriola Island gave way to Valdez. Off its southwestern edge the green lumps of Reid, Ruxton and DeCourcy, then Thetis and Kuper Islands. This has to be one of the most beautiful parts of the world, these jade-like islands rimmed with white where green-blue waves broke on the rocks." Getting to such magical places is worth the price of the trip.
In this paradise for vacation homes and millionaire getaways, multiple perspectives hint that a pricey sexual dysfunction clinic called WISDOM, along with the collusion of a pharmaceuticals company, has been crossing the line to provide cutting-edge services. Deep in the secret labs, how do hermaphroditic tropical fish relate to the excruciating genital complications that Sandro suffered? The consortium of doctors has a first-rate reputation, but could greed be getting in the way? With consummate skill and a minimum of terminology, the authors reduce a complex science to layman's terms. Their research, as revealed in the credits, has been comprehensive.
Both Noel and Kyra bring complementary strengths to the team. The daring, devil-may-care Kyra can be counted on to don dark clothes, grab her lock picks and cross thresholds at midnight without qualm. Divorced more than once, she's also conflicted about getting serious about her latest boyfriend, Jerome, whose dog clearly resents her. Could Joel be too nice? The more cerebral Noel works well in the background, crunching the logical numbers and filling in the more subtle elements. Perhaps named after the inimitable Noel C, he's still recovering from the death of his partner Brendan, returning slowly to life by pursuing his investigations. Between developing the case, being hired, fired, and then rehired by Sandro's friends, the pair relaxes with gourmet meals and enjoy the merits of the temperate Pacific Northwest, as much at home on the American as on the Canadian side. The droll humour between this perfect odd couple punctuates the atmosphere with a welcome change of pace from most mystery novels.
Duncan and Szanto bring their A-game to this daring and complex novel, where understanding takes the place of judgment on thorny social issues. Their psychological examination of the nature of evil shines through the multiple perspectives, as the body count rises and motivation peels back layer by layer to the sharp and bitter truth. From Campbell River in the north, down the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca to the San Juans and south to Tacoma, four hundred miles and as many island crimes wait to be discovered. Triple-I has only begun its odyssey.
